Building a business is like climbing a mountain.
The journey of life, the same.

Your trail winds around, up and down over ridge lines, through the valleys.

There are overlooks where you stop and view where you came from, and where you’re going.

I often work with business owners trying to sell their companies.
It’s a fun job – always keeping me on my toes. When there’s a lot of money on the line, the juices flow. The stakes are high.

It’s the most exciting time in a business’ life cycle, when the equity holders finally get to cash in.

My thoughts? In a word: WOW.

The Only Three Ways to Make Money
I spent the formative years of my upbringing near the coast of South Carolina, in an area known as the “Lowcountry”. It’s a natural landscape of low-lying swamps, creeks, rivers, and islands – with the ocean nearby. Oak trees, some of which are centuries old, line the backroads. The breeze tangles with “Spanish moss” hanging down from the branches. The area is majestic and has its own vibe.

Every company is the same.
Or, at least, every company can be described by one definition:

Every company is: a combination of people -and- machines -and- money -and- time, making a product -or- service -or- both, sold to a customer, for a price.

Products vs. Services
PRODUCTS
You own products.

When you make them, they become your property. You can sell them to others… even while you sleep.

Intellectual property generates royalties, like real estate generates rent. Selling products generates profit margin, when done properly.
